If you are planning a motorbike adventure in Northern Vietnam during May or June, you are in for a treat. While many travelers flock to the region in the autumn, the early summer months offer a completely unique and breathtaking experience on the Cao Bang Loop.
At Ha Giang Motorventures, we call this the "Green Season." As the dry winter fades, the early summer rains breathe life back into the mountains. Here is everything you need to know about riding the Cao Bang Loop in May and June, and why it might just be the best time for your epic adventure.
During the dry season, the famous Ban Gioc Waterfall can sometimes slow to a gentle trickle. But come May and June, the early rains feed the Quay Son River. The waterfall swells, becoming intensely powerful, wide, and absolutely majestic. If you want those dramatic, mist-filled photos of Southeast Asia's largest waterfall, this is the time to go.

Dusty roads and dry fields are replaced by an explosion of color. The limestone mountains become covered in deep, vibrant jungle greens, and the farming valleys transform into lush tapestries. Every twist and turn on the mountain passes reveals scenery that looks like it belongs in a movie.
Unlike the freezing temperatures of December or January, May and June bring warm, tropical weather. After a long day of riding, there is nothing better than taking a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear, turquoise waters of the Lenin Stream (near Pac Bo Cave) or swimming safely near your homestay.

Let’s be honest: May and June are the beginning of the summer season in Northern Vietnam, which means you will likely encounter some rain. (Read more about the harsh realities of mountain weather in our post: 5 Brutal Truths About the Cao Bang Loop.
However, it is rarely a non-stop, all-day drizzle. Instead, you can expect hot, sunny mornings followed by sudden, heavy afternoon showers that pass quickly, leaving the air incredibly fresh and the skies clear for beautiful sunsets. Temperatures generally range from 24°C to 32°C (75°F - 89°F).
If you are hitting the loop during these months, a little preparation goes a long way:
1. Pack Serious Rain Gear: A flimsy plastic poncho won't cut it. Bring a high-quality, two-piece waterproof suit (jacket and pants). Note: If you book with Ha Giang Motorventures, we provide heavy-duty rain gear and waterproof bags for your luggage!
2. Start Your Days Early: Since afternoon showers are common, we start our riding days early in the morning. This allows us to cover the most spectacular passes under the clear morning sun and reach our cozy homestays before any heavy rain begins.

A.May and June mark the transition from the mild spring into the tropical early summer. The temperatures begin to rise, typically ranging between 25°C and 32°C (77°F - 90°F), and the humidity increases significantly. This period also kicks off the early rainy season. You can expect hot, sunny mornings often followed by sudden, heavy, and refreshing afternoon downpours. The rain rarely lasts all day, but it dramatically cools the air.
A.Because the landscape literally bursts into life! After the dry winter and spring, the May and June rains act as a massive reset button for the region's flora. The sprawling valleys (like the stunning Phong Nam Valley) transform into seas of brilliant, almost neon-green rice paddies. The jungle foliage covering the limestone karst mountains becomes incredibly thick and vibrant. It is arguably the best time of year for nature photography.
A.If you want to see Southeast Asia's largest waterfall display its raw, thundering power, this is the time to go. During the dry season, the waterfall is beautiful but calm. In May and June, the incoming rains swell the Quay Son River, fusing the multiple cascades into a massive, roaring curtain of water. You will feel the mist on your face long before you even step onto the bamboo viewing rafts!
A.The best time to visit Cao Bang is during the "Green Season" from May to September, or the dry autumn from October to November. May to September brings warm weather, lush green valleys, and the most powerful water flow at Ban Gioc Waterfall. October and November offer cooler, dry riding conditions and stunning golden harvest landscapes.
A.Riding during the early rains requires caution. The sudden downpours can make the mountain roads slick, and you must always be prepared to pull over and put on rain gear. If you are a beginner or intermediate rider, we strongly advise against self-driving in wet conditions. If you read our [Cao Bang Loop 2026: The Ultimate First-Timer’s Guide], you will see that booking a Motorventures Easy Rider is the ultimate travel hack. Our local guides know exactly how to handle the wet roads safely, allowing you to stay relaxed.
A.One of the greatest secrets of the "Green Season" is the lack of crowds! Because most massive tour buses target the autumn harvest months (September/October), May and June sit right in the shoulder season. You get to experience the epic viewpoints, the mysterious Nguom Ngao Cave, and the majestic Ban Gioc Waterfall without having to elbow your way through hundreds of other tourists. It is a highly intimate, authentic time to ride.
